HOLLYWOOD COCKTAILS RECIPIES

Published by BUZZA-CARDOZO OF HOLLYWOOD in 1933, Hollywood Cocktails was a bestselling cocktail booklet that was timed to the end of Prohibition (1920-1933). During Prohibition Hollywood did not go “dry.” Bootleggers made a fortune in Hollywood, a town where many possessed great wealth and questionable morals. Even though Hollywood was awash in illegal hootch, the repeal of the ban on the sale of alcohol opened the floodgates to sell without worry. Bars, clubs, and restaurants proliferated, all anxious to cash in on Screenland’s unquenchable thirst.

The end of Prohibition coincided with the American public’s growing fascination of all things related to movies and movie makers. Consequently, the booklet was filled with cocktail recipes named after major movie stars of that period. Here are a few examples:

DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS COCKTAIL

1 oz. Plymouth Gin

1 oz. French vermouth

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled stemmed cocktail glass. Squeeze an orange peel and lemon peel on top.

MARY PICKFORD COCKTAIL

1 1/2 oz. Bacardi rum

1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice

1 teaspoon grenadine

6 dashes maraschino syrup

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled stemmed cocktail glass.

GINGER ROGERS COCKTAIL

1 oz. Dry gin

1 oz. French vermouth

1 oz. Apricot brandy

4 dashes squeezed lemon juice

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled stemmed cocktail glass.

GRETA GARBO COCKTAIL

1 oz. French vermouth

1 oz. Brandy

1 oz. Fresh squeezed orange juice

1 oz. Grenadine

1 dash cream de menthe

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a rocks/old fashion glass. Top with a 1/2 oz. of port wine.

JEAN HARLOW COCKTAIL

1 oz Bacardi rum

1 oz. Italian vermouth

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled stemmed cocktail glass. Squeeze slices of lime or lemon peel on top.

JOHNNY WEISSMULLER COCKTAIL

1 oz. Gin

1 oz. Bacardi rum

1 oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice

1 level teaspoon powdered sugar

1 dash Grenadine

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled stemmed cocktail glass.

lupe vÉlez Cocktail

15 oz. Jamaican rum

7 1/2 oz. Kümmel liqueur

7 1/2 oz fresh squeezed orange juice

1 dash Pimento Dram liqueur

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker or pitcher with ice. Shake/stir vigorously. Strain into rocks/old fashioned glasses with ice.

Serves 6.

MAE WEST Cocktail

5 oz. Brandy

1 teaspoon powdered sugar

1 egg yoke

Combine ingredients in a dry cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a rocks/old fashion glass with ice. Sprinkle a dash of cayenne pepper on top.

Will Rogers Cocktail

1 oz French vermouth

1 oz. Plymouth Gin

1 oz. fresh squeezed orange juice

4 dashes Curacao orange liqueur

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled stemmed cocktail glass.

1 1/2 oz. Wineglass Rye or Canadian Whiskey

2 dashes Angostura bitters

2 dashes Curacao
